PSA vs CGC vs Beckett vs ACE: which card grading company is best?

PSA, Beckett (BGS), CGC and ACE all grade Pokémon cards from 1 to 10, but they don’t use the same rules. The same card can come back a 9 at one and a 10 at another. Here’s how they differ, and which one suits which card.

Quick answer: PSA gives one overall grade and is the best-known slab. Beckett gives four subgrades (centering, corners, edges, surface) and a Black Label for four 10s. CGC has a Pristine 10 above its Gem Mint 10. ACE is UK-based, gives subgrades and is the cheapest to send from the UK.

PSA

PSA gives one overall grade with no subgrades. A PSA 10 (Gem Mint) needs 55/45 centering or better on the front and 75/25 on the back. PSA can add a qualifier such as OC (off-centre) when one problem stands out.

Beckett (BGS)

Beckett grades centering, corners, edges and surface separately, and the overall grade follows the lowest of them. A 10 in all four is a Black Label; Beckett’s centering limits for a 10 are strict, 50/50 on the front.

CGC

CGC’s top grade is Pristine 10 (flawless under magnification, 50/50 centering), above Gem Mint 10. Its centering limits for 10 are the same as PSA’s: 55/45 front, 75/25 back.

ACE

ACE is a UK grading company. It gives subgrades, and its overall grade is never more than one above the lowest subgrade. Being in the UK, there’s no shipping to the US: see ACE Grading UK.

Which should you choose?

  • Selling a card that’s worth a lot: PSA slabs are the most widely recognised.
  • A card you think is perfect: Beckett’s Black Label or CGC’s Pristine 10 can be worth more.
  • Saving money and time from the UK: ACE.
